New Scots: Matilda Sandahl

In the latest of our series, we meet another person who’s made their home here.

What’s your name?

Matilda Sandahl

Age and family?

23, living with boyfriend

Occupation?

I work as a marketing assistant for a clothing company

Where are you from originally?

Linköping, Sweden

When did you come to Scotland?

Summer 2012

Why did you come to Scotland?

After high school, I wanted to try something new, and since I did not know what I wanted to study at university, I figured I could go abroad to work for a bit, and practise my English. I chose Scotland because it is close to Sweden, both geographically and culturally.

How’s it been in reality?

At first, it was difficult because I was here on my own without knowing anybody and I was only 19 years old. After I settled a bit and found a good place to live, a job as a marketing assistant (and later on university studies), it felt a lot better and today I call Edinburgh my home.

What is Scots’ best quality?

They are easy to talk to, and are more easygoing than Swedes. I was amazed how little time it took before I had a bunch of local Scottish friends.

And the worst?

Sometimes some of them let the alcohol take over a bit too much.

What’s the funniest story about your time in Scotland?

Basically every time I tell visiting friends what is actually in the haggis they are eating.

And the future, will you stay?

Yes definitely. My boyfriend is Scottish and it is a beautiful place to live.
