Case numbers rise sharply in Scotland

The number of new COVID infections in Scotland continues to rise significantly after the school holidays are over. Yesterday, another record was set in the British part of the country, with more than 7,100 new infections in a day. According to official information, the number of new infections within a week is less than 640 per 100,000 residents, much higher than the British average of around 350.

There are many new infections especially in teenagers. It relates to the start of the new school year in Scotland in mid-August. It is feared that even in England, the largest part of the country, cases of infection will increase rapidly when the summer holidays end this week.

Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has meanwhile had to temporarily self-isolate. “I received a notification tonight that I was identified as a close contact of someone who had tested positive for Covid-19,” she wrote on Twitter yesterday. Accordingly, she will now go into self-isolation till she gets the result of a PCR test, Sturgeon continued.
