A woman found a diamond while sorting the garbage in the house. One expert estimated it to cost $2.7 million, thegoaspotlight.com reported.

The BBC reported that the 34-carat gem will be sold at auction in London. A Northumberland resident was cleaning her house when she found a shiny round stone the size of a coin. He confused it with a simple jewel and almost threw the find. However, on the advice of a neighbor, the woman, who chose to remain anonymous, decided to take the “thing” to the jeweler, among other things, accumulated during years of visiting flea markets.

“A woman came to us with a jewelry bag, she had a job in town, and she decided to stay,” recalls Mark Lane, an employee at Featonby’s Auctioneers. “It was a huge stone, bigger than a pound coin, at first I thought it was cubic zirconia, the twin of synthetic diamonds. We sent it to our partners in London, after which it was certified by experts in Antwerp who confirmed that it is a 34-carat diamond.”

Measurement in carats is related to the weight of the stone: heavier diamonds have a higher value.

Auctioneer Mark Lane says the gem’s valuation was a blow to him. According to him, this is the most expensive diamond he has ever held in his hands. “The colour, the purity, the size… it is unusual to find a 34-carat diamond,” Nova TV quoted him as saying.

According to the expert, the owner of the diamond does not remember where this stone came from. Mark Lane said, “She often went to flea markets and bought all kinds of garbage. She never thought it could be a diamond.” The gem will be auctioned on November 30 in London.
