Coach Fischer sees union duty: make points
Berlin For coach Urs Fischer, Union Berlin’s first home game in the group stage of the Conference League is already paving the way for advancement to the new European Cup.
“If you want to establish yourself in the first two places, you need points,” Fischer said ahead of the Bundesliga team’s final training session for the game against Maccabi Haifa. “We will do everything possible to leave Berlin three points to have a chance at the final bill,” the Swiss insisted before the game at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday evening (9:00 pm / TV Now).
Fischer: “Appear with the Dots on the Table”
Slavia was defeated in Prague at the start of the Conference League with 1:3. “It’s up to us to come to the table with names and numbers,” Fisher said. He made his team responsible for the game against the Israeli champions.
Fischer gave no insight into the planning of his personnel for the defense. Due to the failures of Timo Baumgartl (concussion) and Paul Jeckel (yellow-red suspension), union coaches no longer have a trained central defender with professional experience in their European Cup squad other than regulars Marvin Friedrich and Robin Noche.
Switching from back three to back four is one option. Fischer might even go back to Julian Ryerson at headquarters all the way. “I still believe I can find a good solution. We’ll see what happens tomorrow,” Fisher said.
Possible lineup:
1. FC Union Berlin: Luthe – Friedrich, Noche, Ryerson – Trimmel, Khedira, Prommel, Puchaz – Krause, Haraguchi – Behrens
Maccabi Haifa: Cohen – Goldberg, Planic, Arad, Tawatha – Rodriguez, Jaber, Mohamed, Cheri, Atzili – Donoh
Referee: Nicholas Walsh (Scotland)
