The English national team plays consistently well, but rarely brilliantly. For many years now, the team from the football homeland has also succeeded in shooting penalties.

LONDON – The English National Team’s only major title win was some time ago, but Germany will never forget it. German and English fans can still argue about the “Wembley goal” which led to the 1966 World Cup victory in their own country.

English National Team: Three Lions of Wembley

England likes to call itself the homeland of football. In fact, the England national team, along with neighboring Scotland, is the oldest national team in the world. In 1872, they both played their first international match. As in rugby and hockey, football has separate teams for the four parts of England, Scotland, Wales and the Northern Kingdom of the United Kingdom.

Also known is the surname The Three Lions, which is derived from the English coat of arms with three golden lions. The song “Three Lions”, released in 1996 for the European Football Championship in his own country, has become the unofficial anthem of the English national team. The most important English stadium is London’s famous Wembley Stadium, which was fully built in 2007.

England’s national team: successes and records

The English national team could hardly shine internationally. He only celebrated the record at the British Home Championships, held annually from 1884 to 1984 against Scotland, Wales and Ireland (Northern Ireland from 1950), with England winning 54 times.

The biggest success was winning the 1966 World Cup in his country. The controversial goal of Geoff Hurst in the 101st minute fell to 3–2 as the “Wembley goal” in football history. It was not until the 1990s that a team at the University of Oxford came to the conclusion that the ball was not actually in the goal.

Further successes at the World Championships were semi-finals in 1990 and 2018, which ended with a third-place loss in the game. In the European Championships, England had only secured third place once: a win against the then USSR in 1968 in Italy. The English national team drew a lot of ridicule for their regular failure on penalties in major tournaments.

England national team: international match record

The English national team’s international match record is very positive after 1,010 games: The Three Lions celebrated a total of 576 wins, compared to 192 defeats and 242 draws.

The English are in close proximity with the German national team, at least fueled by the tabloids. The international match record is balanced: both teams have won 13 times each. There are also six draws.

England national team: current players and coaches

After an early exit from the English national team at the European Football Championships in 2016, coach Roy Hodgson resigned. His position was handled by former international Gareth Southgate, who built a strong team full of young players. It managed a simple qualification for EM 2021. Current Team:

It is still unclear which players will be in the European Championship. Everton’s regular goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is currently missing due to an injury, but should be fit again in the summer. Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, who was the youngest player of the tournament at the 2016 European Championships, currently suffers from ankle problems.
