German Sustainability Award for Oscar Winner Whitaker
Oscar winner and American actor Forrest Whitaker has received the German Sustainability Award this year. The 60-year-old will be recognized for his “outstanding commitment to social justice,” the foundation announced. Whitaker, who received the Oscar for Best Leading Actor (“The Last King of Scotland”) in 2006, founded the aid organization “Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative” and is a UNESCO Special Envoy.

British soul singer and activist Joss Stone received another Sustainability Award for supporting social projects around the world. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also been honored for the “European Green Deal”, which aims to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050. The award for the politician was announced last year, but not awarded.
Stefan Schulz-Hausmann, chairman of the board of the German Sustainability Award Foundation, said of the decision, “All award winners are united in their efforts to use the crisis as an opportunity for substantial improvement and thus secure our common future. ” The German Sustainability Award is a national award for excellence in sustainability in business, municipalities and research. The awards are to be given in Düsseldorf on 2 and 3 December.
