England coach Eddie Jones claimed responsibility for his side’s poor performance for their historic loss to Scotland at Twickenham on Saturday.
England began defending the Six Nations title with their first home loss to Scotland in 38 years.
There was a war outside the home and Scotland took advantage as they dominated possession and territory for most of the game.
England also won several penalties, with No.8 Billy Vunipola receiving a yellow card in the first half, with Scotland scoring the only try of the game.
“We were at our best and as head coach I take responsibility for that,” Jones said. Scotland played very well and they are to be congratulated. We have to look forward and Italy next weekend is a great opportunity for us.
‘It is what it is. I accept that I will not find the right players for this game and therefore we did not perform at the level we expected. We were not very good today and we have to accept it. Scotland initially had a 10–1 penalty count and 75% possession meant we were not able to get our runners into the game.
Meanwhile, England captain Owen Farrell has said that he hopes the defeat will serve as a wake-up call as they face tough trips to Cardiff and Dublin between Italy and France.
“We struggled to hold our pace and played a lot in our own half,” Farrell said. I think we worked very hard and accepted many punishments. They have been rewarded for various reasons and this is what happens when you are under pressure.
