Glasgow (SID) – Scottish football champions Glasgow Rangers won the City derby 1-0 (0-0) against arch-rivals Celtic. In the 425th edition of the traditional Old Firm derby, Swede Philipp Helander scored the goal of the day (67th). It was the 167th win in the Glasgow Derby for the record champions, with the hoops winning 158 games to date.
In front of 50,000 spectators at the sold-out Ibrox Stadium, a fast-paced and intensely competitive game developed from the start. Rangers had a better start and got their first chance (second) to score in the game through Alfredo Morelos.
Odsonne Edouard took the lead for the guests after about half an hour, but was unsuccessful due to a strong reaction from Rangers keeper Robbie McCrory (29th). A little later, Ryan Kent hit the post for the home side (32nd).
After the break, team manager Steven Gerrard’s team had the advantage as Celtic could not pick up the pace from the first half on the pitch. Almost logically, the home side again took the lead. Helander hit the head unbearable for Joe Hart (67.).
In the closing stages, team manager Ange Postecoglu’s team fought hard to level. But thanks to goalkeeper McCrory, who thwarted the draw against twice-strong Japanese Kyogo Furuhashi (69./86.), The Rangers narrowed the lead over time.
