Tight Bulkheads: Franco Foda travels with some players to qualify for the World Cup in Glasgow, to whose name they first have to spell. And even earlier it was sometimes awkward against the Tartan Army.
1950: Tiger goes by train
One of the beautiful football rituals lost these days is a player worthy of football on your shoulders. This followed with a 1–0 win at Hampden Park, Austria in December 1950 with goalkeeper Walter Zeman. On the return journey, the “Earlberg Express” had to be stopped several times to be honored by various regional football officials. Yes, you still walked away from the game by train – returning to Vienna four days after the match.
1951: We were up against Char Willie
Six months later, in revenge, the Austrian team competed without numbers, with four men named William playing for the Scots. Willie and his companions exited vigorously and did not back down from attacks by the German referee. The final score in the match between the football and freestyle wrestlers: 4: 0.
1969: Referees in green
In Austria’s 2–0 win at Vienna, Soviet referee Carlo Krushvili returned to the field in a green robe after the break – at which time the referee still had to appear strictly in black. Before the break, the Scots had mistakenly told Krushvili about his likeness with his dark blue jersey.
1994: Alone with Adi team
Team owner Herbert Prohaska called the seven Violet Heroes to pay tribute to their entry into Salzburg, Austria in the UEFA Cup final against Inter Milan. Clearly without looking at the calendar: The first final was just six days after the friendly against Scotland. Therefore, the Salzburg team was allowed to leave the team camp after 24 hours. Only Adi Hueter, who was suspended against Inter, stayed and scored against Scotland in 1: 2.
2005: premieres premiered without card games
Marcus Scope, René Aufhauser and Christian Merleb were the first Red Bull Salzburg players to wear the team’s jersey in August 2005. Otherwise nothing was as it used to be: instead of a tough fight, a 2–2 win against Scotland in Graz went without a yellow or red card.
2007: Flowers for Mama Evansitz
In the Euro Test against Scotland at Hannappi Stadium, Andreas Evansitz drove the Gantlet. Rapid supporters still resented Salzburg’s move to the ersFB captain. Mother Ewanschitz also experienced a whistle-blowing concert and swung in the stands and was rested with a bouquet of flowers by ÖFB.
