The New York Yankees will play the next day. On Thursday night at Petco Park, the Yankees outscored the Tampa Bay Rays in 4 games of the LDS and also qualified for the two-match (NY5, TB1) series. Crucial Game 5 will be played on Friday night. The winner goes on to face the Astros in the ALCS. The loser goes home.
Jordan Montgomery and ace relievers Chad Green, Zac Britton, and Aroldis Chapman hit one run each from Ray 4 and three hits in Game 4, and the Yankees received timely home runs from Luke Waite (solo) and Glaber Torres (two runs). . Far away. Run insurance at some end, the game feels more one-sided than giving the game a final score. It was all tight.
Here are three takeaways from Game 4.
Montgomery gave the Yankees what they needed
Pitching other than Garrett Cole is a real problem for the postseason Yankees. Their non-call hurlers allowed 25 runs in 31 innings going into Game 4, and they gave the ball to Jordi Montgomery with their season on the line. He had a 5.11 ERA in the regular season.
Montgomery gave the Yankees what they wanted. He made the Rays one run in four innings, and danced around the danger in the third and fourth innings (trapping two runners in each inning). Understandably, the Yankees did not allow Montgomery to pass through the lineup for the third time. They ran with four innings.
Once Montgomery passed them through four innings, the Yankees were able to free the game from their high advantage. Chad Leela retired all six of those batsmen, Jack Britt retired all five of those batsmen, and Aroldis Chapman walked better to go for a two-four save.
After allowing at least seven runs and at least three homers in back-to-back postseason games for the first time in franchise history in the Games-201 in, New York’s pitching staff stopped the rays in a game check. Actually, there was no way to push Game 5 without some excellent pitching performance, and four pitchers on Thursday would provide it.
The crime made some short history
Following Luke Waite’s solo home to open the scoring, the Yankees loaded the bases with no outs against Rays opener Ryan Thompson, but DJ Lamheu scored just one run on a sacrifice fly. It felt like there was a big evolving opportunity that they would eventually regret.
The Yankees managed the nurse until the sixth inning, while Glaber Torres insured a two-run home in the Western Metal Supply building in the left-hand area. He now has five home runs after his career, the most by Yankee before his 24th birthday with Mickey Mantle.
Giacarlo Stanton did not go into the deep depths of Game 4 – he hit six homers in New York’s first five postseason games – but he did a double rip on the left field wall. He is now the first player in MLB history to hit an extra base in his team’s first six games in a single season of his post.
Also, Lamheau started Game 4 with an infield single, extending his postseason hitting streak to 12 games. He won last year’s ALCS. Game 1’s and the Yankees are bound for Larry’s third longest postseason hit in history:
- Hank Bauer: 17 games (1956-58)
- Derek Jeter: 17 games (1998-99)
- Derek Jeter: 12 games (2001-01)
- Bernie Williams: 12 games (2003-04)
- DJ Lamhiu: 12 games and counting (2019-current)
Torres, Stanton and Lemhi are all in the game. Pick a history in, small history, but nonetheless history. More importantly for the Yankees, everyone contributed to the win and pushed to Game 5.
We’re getting Game 5
And it may be the only one in LDS. The Astros and Braves have already won the LCS. So their ticket has been punched, and the Dodgers have taken a 2-0 series lead over Pedres. Game 5 is Friday night. That would be Garrett Call on the Yankees ’short left. Rays Tyler Glass, in the prospect of having an all-arms-dec-deck situation for Tyampa, is coping with his Game 2 starter.
