The head of Kaspersky Lab, Evgeny Kaspersky, talked about cyber espionage and the situation with Russian hackers.
He said this in an interview. “RIA Novosti”.
“The smartest, most professional hackers speak Russian. But there’s cybercrime, and there’s cyber espionage, there are criminals, and there are hackers who work for the state. There’s an attack, but we can guess, say Language. Sometimes there are lines of code, all kinds of typos, and then we can figure out what language they speak. Speaking of cyber espionage, the most professional, most aggressive spy attacks in English, are made by speakers in Russian and Chinese “, – said Kaspersky.
According to him, cybercrime is divided into everyday and very professional.
“Ordinary hackers are professionals, but not ultra-high-level, technically they are not so advanced. Among them are Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Turk, Russian. That is, all languages, including broken English. But most of all Bar ordinary cybercriminals speak in Chinese and Latin American Spanish,” he said.
At the same time, according to the entrepreneur, the most professional cybercriminals speak Russian like almost all the best programmers.
“The Soviet, Russian education system produces vast numbers of the smartest programmers. The most vicious cybercriminals graduate from the same universities as the most professional programmers who work on the bright side,” Kaspersky said.
According to programmers, criminal business is organized in the same way as a normal one. Criminals have their own economy. Usually hackers make viruses to sell it. The buyer infects thousands of computers worldwide and then sells access to the infected computers.
According to him, the victims of Russian-speaking hackers are more often North America, that is, the USA, Canada, Europe, less often Asian countries, because there are language problems there.
At the same time, they say that almost any cybercrime, especially one that is committed regularly — and cybercriminals require consistent funding — can be uncovered, Kaspersky says.
“Nowadays, criminal gangs hunt mainly for the general office network, they need to go to the accounting department, the financial department, they just need money. But when they understand what profit they get from attacks on the industrial sector. If done, it would hurt. A classic example that happened recently is a cyber attack on a US oil pipeline Colonial Pipe. They hit the office network, not the hardware, and the company was up,” he said.
In addition, Kaspersky noted that due to the conservatism inherent in Russia, many innovations come to the country a little later than in other states, but this does not mean that there are no advanced regions in the Russian Federation.
According to him, the Internet in Russia can be recognized as an advanced field. He said that few European countries cannot boast of the level of Internet development that the Russian Federation has today.
“We sometimes joke that cybercrime is a global problem, but it doesn’t threaten Australia, because they don’t have internet. But they want to grow. They’re working on a big project to connect the entire continent.” But ours is cooler, we also have Internet with Yakut reindeer herders, ”said Kaspersky.
In addition, according to the expert, there are still very advanced sectors, such as the banking sector. Today, Russia is one of the world’s leading countries in terms of mobile banking technologies.
Recall that on May 7, Colonial Pipeline announced a cyber attack on its systems using a ransomware virus. Hackers gained access to 100 GB of data. The movement of petrol was affected by the attack. Russian thieves were accused of organizing him.
It was later revealed that the company was forced to pay a ransom of around $5 million to the hackers.
