Thabane, whose official term ends in 2022, said he would voluntarily quit and retire due to old age.
“The work of the Prime Minister requires a sensory perception and a quick and physical strength. Because of my age, I am no longer as energetic as I once was. As such, I decided to voluntarily leave the office and hand over the reins of government in accordance with the laws of Lesotho, “said Thabane.
Both the prime minister and his wife did not speak publicly about the allegations.
In the statement announcing his scheduled exit, Thabane appealed for unity in the mountain kingdom, saying that his decision to leave should not be used to get political points.
“For my colleagues in the political arena, this is not the time to divide our nation. This is the time for us to join hands and build our institutions, as well as bring our country to lasting peace and prosperity.” Thabane said.
