UN SG special envoy for Libya resigns

The Slovak Jan Kubis, the Special Envoy to the UN Secretary-General, tendered his resignation on Tuesday, UN SG spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced.

“The Special Envoy for Libya has submitted his resignation, which has been accepted with regret by the UN Secretary-General,” the spokesman said during his daily briefing, without specifying the reasons for the decision. He also noted that the head of the international organization would set about finding a “suitable replacement” in the post, ensuring that UN teams on the ground would continue their missions in Libya. Despite his resignation, Kubik will hold a briefing on the situation in Libya before the Security Council on Wednesday, Dujarric said.

Mr Kubik, who resigned a year after taking office, served as Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) from 2015 to 2018, as well as Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan acted as. (Unama), from 2011 to 2015.

The resignation of the UN envoy comes a day after the submission of candidatures for the post of head of state in Libya during elections on 24 December. According to the High Electoral Commission of Libya, 98 candidates, including two women, submitted a dossier for the presidential election.
