The asylum seeker is suspected of assaulting the victim and another 13-year-old girl on Monday morning on their way to school. The other teenager is seriously injured but her life is not in danger.
Arrested by police at a home for asylum seekers not far from the scene of the attack, the suspect, also injured, is currently in hospital, where he underwent surgery.
A prosecutor’s spokesman told AFP it was not yet known whether he injured himself or was injured by a third party. He is not able to walk but can be interrogated. He didn’t want to talk about facts,” he said.
The judge is expected to decide on Tuesday whether to place him in pre-trial custody or commit him to a psychiatric hospital.
“Such incidents incite fear and emotion,” German police commented in a press release, calling on the population to avoid general suspicion towards all foreigners or asylum seekers.
“I am sorry for the young girl who was killed and I sincerely hope that the injured girl recovers,” Interior Secretary Nancy Feser said in a post on Twitter on Monday. “Police are probing the background of the attack,” he added.
