Appointed Anas Sarwar as leader of Scottish Labor Party

Mr Sarwar’s appointment came in January following the shocking resignation of Richard Leonard, who said it was in the party’s best interest to step down.

After taking over from Kezia Dugdale, Mr. Leonard was the leader of the party for three years.

In a speech to members following the announcement, Mr. Sarwar thanked Ms. Lennon for a campaign that “showed the best of our party, not the worst of our policies”.

Talking directly to voters, he said: ‘I know the Labor Party has a lot of work to do to regain your trust because if we are sincerely honest you did not get the Scottish Labor Party that you deserve.

“I am sorry that we were not very good, exacerbating injustice, inequality and division, and I will work day and night so that we can build a country that we need.

Mr Sarwar is the first leader of an ethnic minority political party in Britain – who says that “there is something good about Scotland and its people”.

“But the fight for equality is far from over,” he said, “and I will work with all our diverse communities in Scotland to rebuild the country we love”.

British Labor leader Keir Starr also congratulated Mr Sawar. He tweeted: “Vishal congratulates Anas for election as head of Scottish Labor Party. I look forward to working with him to secure our economy, protect our NHS and rebuild our country . “

“I know that Anas will do the hard work required to regain the confidence of the Scottish people and build for the future as we are emerging from this epidemic.”

Mr Sarwar will take over the leadership of the party ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections, which are due on 6 May.
