Apple TV+ has finally unveiled the first preview of “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” after confirming its theatrical release next December. His new collaboration with Studio A24 in which he adapted one of the most popular works of the great British playwright William Shakespeare.

Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand lead a cast that also includes the appearances of Harry Melling, Brendan Gleeson, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell and Corey Hawkins, telling the story of a general who receives prophecies from three witches who announce his arrival on the throne. Scotland instills in his wife a desire for greed and power.

“The Tragedy of Macbeth” is the first film to be written and directed by Joel Coen without the direct involvement of his brother Ethan, who is currently on a hiatus from his film career to devote himself to theatre. Washington will officially join the film’s cast along with McDormand in February 2020 as production begins in Los Angeles.

The film had to resume operations by July 2020 due to complications caused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last May, A24 announced its new alliance with the Apple TV+ platform to ensure its distribution in early 2022 following the film’s limited theatrical release.

As Shakespeare, one of the most popular classical writers of the English language, Macbeth has appeared on the big screen on several occasions. The most recent was in 2015 under the direction of Justin Kurzel, with featured performances by Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

Nor is this the first period drama A24 has featured in its catalogue. This year released “The Green Knight,” a film in which director David Lowery makes a free adaptation of a story from the legend of King Arthur. Joel Coen’s new film has a scheduled release date in theaters on December 25, while it hits Apple TV+ on January 14.
