The board of the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority has agreed to license Rosatom’s subsidiary Akkuyu Nuclear Company to build the fourth unit of the Akkuyu plant, Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

The license issued by the authority in favor of the Russian company allows all construction, construction and installation works to be started at the Unit 4 site, including nuclear safety facilities.

The company sent a package of documents required to obtain the license to the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NDK) on May 12, 2020. The package included a copy of the Preliminary Safety Report (PSAR), a copy of the Potential Safety Assessment (PSA). ) Reports and other documents confirming the safety and reliability of the unit. The fourth power to be built at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant site.

Akkuyu Nuclear was granted the license to build the fourth unit after the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority board finished evaluating documents submitted. The license allows for the construction of the reactor for the fourth unit as well as its turbine unit to be commissioned.

“Obtaining the construction permit for the fourth power unit is one of the important stages in the implementation of the Akkuyu plant construction project,” said Akkuyu Nuclear General Manager Anastasia Zotiva. This is an important document.

He said, “By obtaining the license for the construction of the fourth power unit, we have completed the process of obtaining all the necessary licenses to complete the project for the construction of the four unit nuclear power plant, which we are building in Turkey. “

And he continued, “Thus, we have confirmed that our project enjoys the required level of nuclear safety and has undergone the necessary extensive study and intensive development, and we have also confirmed that it is a viable and Realistic project. Unique project, in collaboration with our partners from the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority. Now we are ready for construction work which includes all four power units of the plant. Beginning next year we will be laying foundation slabs for reactor unit buildings. Will start related work.

Prior to the grant of the building permit for Unit 4 to Akkuyu Nuclear, preliminary work was carried out at the unit site, including engineering surveys and excavation work, based on a limited building permit issued on June 30, 2021.

It is planned to start the construction of the concrete base for the foundation slabs of the reactor and turbine units of the fourth power unit before the end of this year, and then it will serve the purpose of strengthening the foundations.

Within the framework of the licensing process for the Akkuyu project, which provides for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, approximately 120 licenses and permits must be obtained from various relevant Turkish government institutions. To date, all necessary licenses and permits have already been issued, including the project’s environmental impact assessment report, power generation licenses and building permits for the four power units, as well as operating permits for the eastern charging station at Akkuyu Nuclear Power. Currently, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant construction site in Turkey is the largest nuclear power sector site in the world, with construction work going on. The project is being implemented with the participation of more than 12,000 workers and over 1,000 construction machines and vehicles in addition to 70 construction cranes per day. All work on site is carried out in close cooperation with the Turkish side and under the supervision of competent Turkish government institutions and independent inspection agencies.
