Former Manchester United and Scotland manager Tommy Docher has died after a long illness at the age of 92

Glasgow-born Docherty made more than 300 appearances for Preston as a player and won 25 international caps for Scotland. Dockery managed 12 clubs – including Chelsea and Aston Villa and one play in Australia – after a career game that included 25 appearances for Scotland between 1951–59 and more than 300 games at Preston North End.

Docherty was at Old Trafford from 1972 to 1977, highlighting his second division title victory with Bob Paisley’s 2–1 FA Cup final win over Liverpool, replacing Frank O’Farrell. Glasgow was fired in 1977 after an extramarital affair with the wife of a joint physiotherapist whom he later married.

“We have been an incredible team for almost four or five years and it was all about the dock,” Sammy McIlroy, a former United Games player, told Sky Sports News.

His departure changed the style more enthusiastically under successor Dave Sexton.

Docherty took coaching positions in the Sydney Olympics and Melbourne in the early 1980s. However, in 2014, he regretted his decision to leave his Scotland job for United.

“I was stupid,” he told the BBC, “should have stayed with Scotland.” (It) was partly money, I have to be honest about it ”.

He was noted for his quick wit and rude jokes, joking that he had more clubs than golfer Jack Nicklaus.

The Scottish Federation said in a statement that it was deeply saddened by the disappearance of the man, who had a “profound impact on the game”.

“Football has lost an extraordinary personality in Tommy Docherty. He was firm as a great leader in and out of the park, ”said Scottish FA President Rod Petrie.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Tommy Docher, who led the FA Cup victory in 1977 with a compelling and attacking team in Manchester United’s best tradition. Everyone at the club expresses their condolences to Tommy’s loved ones.

A family statement Thursday afternoon regarding Docherty’s death;

“Tommy was peacefully surrounded by his family at home.

“He was a very loving husband, father and father and we will miss him very much.

“We ask that our privacy be respected at this time.”

Chelsea, with whom he won the League Cup in 1965, called Docharty “the legend of our game”.
