A worker infected 533 others with coronavirus in a factory in Ghana, says the president

Ghana has more than 4,700 confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
All 533 contracted the virus from a factory worker in the port city of Tema, the president said in his public address to the nation on Sunday.

The factory infection was detected by a backlog of 921 samples collected for testing last month that health officials have just reported, Akufo-Addo said.

He did not provide any further details regarding the operations or measures to be taken on the situation.

CNN has contacted the Ghanaian ministry of health for comment and awaits a response.

Mass infection at the facility brings the total number of confirmed cases in the West African nation to 4,700, the president said, adding that 22 people have died from coronavirus-related diseases since the outbreak was reported in the country. in March.

Akudo-Addo said that cases continued to increase due to improved testing, stating that “the more people we test for the virus, the more people we will find positive.”

Ghana has performed over 160,000 tests and has added seven other test centers to speed up delivery times.

The president extended the current ban on public gatherings and said that schools and borders across the country will remain closed.

Last month, the president relieved a three-week blockade in its key cities, saying that its coronavirus tests had improved and also to reduce the effect of restrictions on the country’s poor.
