Veteran singer SP Balasubramaniam has died at the age of 74 after contracting a coronavirus.

The Indian star died in Chennai on Friday after testing positive for Covid-19 in August.

Just a few days ago, his son Charan said that his father was “constantly making progress towards recovery”: “He is looking forward to leaving the hospital as soon as possible.”

Charan said Balasubramaniam was watching cricket and tennis matches on his iPad at the hospital.

However, according to local news reports, Balasubramaniam has been receiving lifelong support in the last 24 hours due to ill health.

The singer tested negative for the Covid-19 on September 8, but could not get out of the ventilator due to damage to his lungs.

The star has recorded 40,000 songs

Balasubramaniam, also known as SPB and SP Balu, was one of the world’s most famous post-singers, recording 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages.

He holds the Guinness World Record for the most songs recorded by a singer.

The composer -Scar-winning composer A.R. Rahman had a museum, and sang for him in several films, including his debut in 1992.

He made his film debut in 1966 with the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Mariammada Ramanna, and has performed in thousands of Indian films singing songs in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and English.

Balasubramaniam provided on-screen vocals for stars including Salman Khan and Kamal Hassan, and won the Singer Award at the National Film Awards of India on six occasions.

He has also been awarded some of India’s highest civilian honors, including the 2001 Padma Shri and the 2011 Padma Bhushan.

Balasubramaniam is survived by his wife, Savitri, his daughter Pallavi and son Charan.
