The US Department of Health announced on Monday that dogs from countries with rabies problems should not be brought into the United States. It said a one-year ban was imposed on around 113 countries. However, the order states that dogs that have already arrived must show sufficient evidence that they have been vaccinated against rabies. It said the entry of dogs from overseas was banned because they were not old enough to be fully vaccinated. It said the ban would be effective from July 14. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the statement.

“We do this to protect the health and safety of dogs imported into the United States, as well as the health of the public,” said Dr. Emily Pierce of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pieracchi said there has been an increase in dog imports as well as dogs entering the country with false, fraudulent rabies certificates. In 2020, fake certificates of more than 450 dogs were found. This is an increase of 52% over the last two years, she said. Dr Emily Pierce said that the dog was presenting false certificates that it is more than four months old and such dogs are not allowed to enter the United States.

CDC officials say about 10 million dogs are deported to the United States each year. About 7.5 percent of these dogs are said to be affected by the ban. These restrictions will be relaxed in certain circumstances. Guide dogs who lead the blind say America will make an exception to replace aliens with its dogs. Most of the recently rejected dogs are from Russia, Ukraine and Colombia. CDC officials said a ban has been placed on bringing dogs from countries where the risk of rabies is high.

Douglas Kratt, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, welcomed the ban on exotic dogs. They want to see healthy dogs coming to the country.
