Britain aims to sign £ 20 trade deal with Australia

Britain is set to sign a landmark trade agreement with Australia – which could be signed next month.

The £ 20 billion deal could be sealed within weeks after the two sides join hands on all major parts of the treaty.

Close assistants of Trade Minister Liz Truss vowed to cancel the deal, forcing their Australian counterpart Dan Tehan this week to sit on uncomfortable wooden chairs in the Foreign Office.

But Ms. Truss lured her counterpart with a Vietnamese meal last night before spoiling Down Under Contestant with fish and chips.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said: “We have made major encroachments in recent times and a deal is now in sight.

“I would like to personally thank Dan for his contribution and willingness to do this deal.

“This is a deal that will benefit the UK and all parts of our economy.

“It is a win-win situation for both countries.

“This is a fundamentally liberalization agreement that will support jobs across the country and help us emerge from the epidemic, strengthening the relationship between two democracies that share a fierce belief in the spirit of freedom, trade and fair play .

“We will spend the next few weeks ironing out the details and resolving the outstanding issues, to reach an agreement by June.”

The UK was Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner in 2019 and the first deal to deal with a ‘scratch’ since the UK departed from the European Union.

A source in the Ministry of Commerce said: “This deal ultimately shows what we are capable of doing outside the EU.

“This is the first deal we’ve done completely from scratch and it’s another big win for Liz.”
