In front of more than 50,000 spectators at the sold-out Hampden Park, team manager Ange Postecoglu’s team was the boss in the ring from the start, and especially dominated the first 20 minutes at will. Hibbs worked from a compact defense but remained harmless in the first half and even without a shot on goal. Despite some decent scoring opportunities for Celtic, it went with a flattering 0–0 for Hibbs in the break.

After the change of sides, events rolled over. First, Hanlon surprisingly gave Hibernian the lead with a header (50th). Then Furuhashi practically equalized in exchange for Celtic (52nd). In the course ahead, the two sides had an open exchange of blows. In the 68th minute, Celtic keeper Joe Hart had to risk his head and neck against Martin Boyle, who came before him. A short time later, Furuhashi defeated Hibernian goalkeeper Matt Massey with a lob from the edge of the penalty area to create a 2–1 winner for hoops (72nd).
