China unveils maglev train with a speed of 600 km/h

China launched a 600 km/h maglev train developed and manufactured by the country, becoming the fastest land vehicle in the world.

Chinese media reported today that the maglev was developed and manufactured in the coastal city of Qingdao, Shandong province. Using electromagnetic force, the train does not need to make contact between the body and the track.

China has been using this technology on a very limited scale for almost two decades. Shanghai has a short maglev line that runs from one airport to the city.

China does not yet have an intercity or intercity maglev line that can make good use of high speeds, but several cities, including Shanghai and Chengdu, have begun research. With a speed of 600 km/h, the train takes only 2.5 hours to travel over 1,000 km from Beijing to Shanghai

For comparison, the journey will take three hours by plane and 5.5 hours by high-speed rail.

Countries ranging from Japan to Germany are also looking to build maglev networks, although high costs and incompatibility with existing rail infrastructure remain impediments to rapid development.
