As of Thursday, more than 30 million cases of coronavirus have been reported worldwide. According to the New York Times database. India in particular has made a significant contribution to the recent census, adding an average of more than 93,000,000 new cases a day in the last week.
Cases have seen a decline in some of the countries that were hit hardest initially, but new reports suggest the number of infected people is growing faster than around the world, as many countries have stepped up their testing efforts. The average number of known new cases is now over 250,000 a day. The world has reached 10 million on June 28 and 20 million on August 10.
The United States has the highest number of cases in the world: over 6.7 million. This is followed by India with over 5.1 million and Brazil with about 4.4 million. But in the last seven days, India has added more than 265,000 cases, more than twice as many as in the US over the same period and almost three times as many as in Brazil. Still, India’s per capita number is much lower than the other two recent cases.
The virus has killed about 200,000 people in the United States and 134,000 in Brazil. No other country has reported 100,000 virus-related deaths.
The United States ranks 11th in per capita mortality behind Brazil, followed by Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Belgium, Spain and the United Kingdom. The virus is currently taking a heavy toll in Latin America, with eight of the 10 countries with the highest number of per capita deaths in the past week.
As of Thursday morning, at least 940,100 infected people had died globally, and the virus had been found in almost every country.
