Should the Austrians actually succeed, the statistics against the Scots will be polished again. The record is currently eight wins and seven draws and seven losses each, with the OFB team remaining without a win four times and only winning one of the last nine showdowns.
A slight positive balance results in earlier – sometimes memorable – games. The first match on May 16, 1931 at Hohe Warte ended with a 5:0 for Austria. This game is considered to be the birth of Miracle Team. On June 16, 1954, OFB Selection played its World Cup opening game against the Scots in Zurich, winning 1–0 and eventually finishing third – the biggest success in domestic football history to date.
Less fond memories date back to May 30, 2007, when Scotland won 1–0 at Hanapey Stadium. The game was overshadowed by wild insults from Rapid fans organized at the stadium against the then OFB captain Andreas Evanschitz. Austria has now been without a win against Scotland for five home games, most recently on 20 September 1978 (3–2 in a European Championship qualifier).
