Where are the artifacts the Italian public broadcaster Rai has collected over the years? Italian media reported on Friday that 120 canvases, sculptures, lithographs and tapestries have mysteriously disappeared.
These include the works of Giorgio de Chirico, Camille Corot, Amadeo Modigliani and Claude Monet.
Following warnings from the Directorate of Public Broadcasting, the Roman Public Prosecutor’s Office and a branch of the Carabinieri specializing in the protection of cultural heritage, launched an investigation in March. According to the Italian press, several opinion stations will be involved and separate proceedings may be launched in the north and south of the country.

The matter came to the fore when a copy of the painting “Architettura” by the expressionist Otto Rosai was discovered. The original canvas was stolen and replaced with a copy in the 1970s and then sold by an employee. The employee had been identified, but the time limit for the offense had expired.
Nicola Sinissi, director of Rae’s Artistic Heritage, denies that these are accidental disappearances, even though some objects may have been simply lost. “We are facing a series of disappearances that appear to be targeted,” he told La Repubblica newspaper.

According to La Repubblica and the Roman newspaper Il Messagero, Rae’s art collection numbers 1,500 works, with an estimated value of 100 million euros. The scam is all the more painful because the works of art were purchased with the proceeds of viewing and radio license fees.
