Most of the protests in New York today were peaceful marches – but as night fell, there were also growing cases of destruction and looting.
The looting has appeared extraordinarily organized at times, CNN correspondent Shimon Prokupecz said on the scene.
“They would go to the shops. They would break the windows. You know, they would use hammers. They would run away. And then, others would come. And then, they would come back several times,” said Prokupecz.
Looting and destruction would serve as a second blow to many of the companies already affected by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, he added. Many vandalized stores had already been closed for months and had lost money.
“And now, (the shops are) looted.” Prokupecz said. “Everything removed and now they have to repair the shops, repair the glass.”
Curfew throughout the city: The city’s curfew, which came into effect at 23:00 tonight, will be extended until tomorrow evening – but tomorrow evening will be enacted earlier, instead of 20:00.
“The curfew in the end is probably too late,” said Prokupecz. “They brought more officers. They doubled the number of officers who should have taken care of them today. And that doesn’t even seem to help.”
