Ghana plants trees on a massive scale, targets five million a day

Ghana planted trees on a massive scale yesterday in the fight against deforestation. Ghana’s Environment Commission reported on social media that by noon local time, more than 2.5 million trees out of the planned 5 million trees had been planted.

“The exploitation of forests for economic development has not been sustainable in recent years. We must act now,” President Nana Akufo-Addo said just before planting Lignum vitae. Pokhout is a tropical hardwood and this type of tree is locally known as the tree of life due to its medicinal properties.

According to official figures, the West African country still has about 1.6 million hectares of forest. This is a fraction of what it was in the last century: more than 8 million hectares of forest. Trees have mainly given way to agricultural crops. To a lesser extent, mining and logging also play a part in deforestation.

The government claims it now wants to turn the tide. Therefore, Green Ghana Day should become a recurring event. The ambitious target is to plant about 100 million trees by 2024.

The seeds of about 70 lakh trees were distributed in advance in schools, companies and parks to be able to reach 50 lakh in a day. In the shopping centers of big cities, shopkeepers were given their plantation sets.
