Scotland is planning a new referendum

The first Scottish independence referendum in 2014 failed. Now there must be another, at least if Prime Minister Sturgeon has to make his way. A compatible bill is planned. However, British Prime Minister Johnson does not want anyone to hear about it.

The Scottish Government wants to start a new independence referendum. In a bill, the exact question of time limits, conditions and vote should now be set, as stated by Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Stalin. In the next general election in May 2021, she will campaign for Scotland to become an independent country that can decide its future.

But Sturgeon cannot force a referendum, it needs London approval. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly clarified that he will not allow a second referendum. For her, the question was clarified in the first referendum in 2014.

At the time, about 55 percent of Scots spoke against secession from the United Kingdom. However, Sturgeon argued that Brexit changed the circumstances. In the British general election in December, Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party SNP benefited. Therefore, the party sees itself as determined in its quest for independence.
