Inter suffers from a third-order group stage elimination

MILAN (Reuters) – Inter Milan were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage for the third consecutive season on Wednesday after a 0-0 draw at home to Shakhtar Donetsk, who were also knocked out.

Lautaro Martનેnez rocked the crossbar in the seventh minute of the Group B match, but Inter also created a few chances after that, although Sun Ciro occupied a good Sino and made just four attempts on goal.

Shakhtar finished the level with Borussia Moenchengladbach with eight points, but lost to the Bundesliga team – beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid – on a head-to-head record for third place and will go into the Europa League instead.

Inter, who could have gone on to win, finished bottom of the group with six points after drawing three of their six games and failing to win at home, and the second-round competition was not even reassuring.

Real won the group with 10 points.

Inter coach Antonio Conte said: “There is a lot of remorse, however, I honestly don’t think there has been a lack of cunning, determination or concentration. “We lacked a goal. You can’t win if you don’t score. “

Inter, who beat Shakhtar 0-0 in August last season’s Europa League semifinals, needed to win the match between Real Madrid and Borussia Moenchengladbach, but the match did not end in a draw.

Martinez almost got his initial progress but his shot broke through Nicolo Barela’s cross in front of the crossbar.

After that, Inter pushed for a succession of corners and tried their luck from a long distance but gave Shakhtar’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin little to do.

Romlu Lukaku noticed that Shakhtar had blocked a header by Trubin after a break before launching some of his own attacks.

One of the six Brazil-born players in Shakhtar’s starting line-up, he tested Samir Hendanovich with a fizzing long-range shot and Macau turned over the bar again.

Concluding the Inter European season, Trubin pushed Christian Eriksen out from under the bar during stoppage time.

“It’s great that we gave our supporters and ourselves the opportunity to play European football in the spring,” Trubin said. “Of course, we wanted to continue our path in the UEFA Champions League but we could also be eliminated, so now everything is fine.”
