Cold weather warning issued by Public Health England

Public Health England (PHE) encourages people to stay warmer and find people at risk with a colder climate.

The Met Office Fees has announced that the north-east of England, the north-west of England and the Yorkshire and Humber areas are likely to experience cold weather from 9am on Friday to 9am on Friday.

Dr Owen Landeg, an environmental public health scientist at PHE, said:

Cold weather is not just uncomfortable it can be bad for your health.

It is especially important to heat your home to at least 18 degrees Celsius if you have reduced mobility, are 65 and older, or have a health condition, such as heart or lung disease.

Wearing a few layers of thin clothing is better at trapping heat than a thick layer and will help keep you warm. If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and in your bedroom before you go to bed. If you’re struggling to afford a heating bill, Simple Energy Advice offers free advice about energy efficiency and national grants that can help keep you warm and well.

Finding others at this point is also really important. Weak or elderly neighbors or relatives, especially those living alone or with serious illnesses, remembering the COVID-19 social distance, don’t forget to make sure they are safe, warm and well.

Bonnie Diamond, Met Meteorologist at MetFish, said:

December has started to get much colder than last month, with widespread low temperatures putting the country at risk of frost, ice and granular weather.

With temperatures typically limited to to Celsius during the day and dropping everywhere from freezing overnight, a cold weather warning has been issued covering most of northern England and will remain in place until at least next Tuesday.
