Israeli right-wing conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a government within two years of the fourth parliamentary election. The same period expired on Wednesday night (local time). This means that Netanyahu’s opponents have a chance to finish the 71-year-old. Whether they will succeed in this is still fully open. Netanyahu would initially remain the head of a transitional government.

President Raven Rivlin was expected to appoint opposition leader Zaire Lapid to form the government on Wednesday. His future party belongs to the political center. Netanyahu on Monday offered Naftley Bennett, the head of the religious-nationalist party Yamina, the post of head of government in an alternative model to stop the “Left Government”. Netanyahu said that Bennett could become Prime Minister in the first year.
Ex-Defense Secretary Bennett, Netanyahu’s former aide, declined the offer. Bennett said he is ready to form a right-wing government anytime.
