Netanyahu failed to form government in Israel

Israeli right-wing conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a government within two years of the fourth parliamentary election. The same period expired on Wednesday night (local time). This means that Netanyahu’s opponents have a chance to finish the 71-year-old. Whether they will succeed in this is still fully open. Netanyahu would initially remain the head of a transitional government.

Netanyahu has been in this position for twelve years and is the longest serving prime minister in the country’s history. A process of corruption is going on against him. He denies the allegations leveled therein.

President Raven Rivlin was expected to appoint opposition leader Zaire Lapid to form the government on Wednesday. His future party belongs to the political center. However, according to observers, it will not be easy for him to form an alliance. The fifth new election has not been excluded. Should this happen, Netanyahu may also have a chance to become prime minister again.

“It’s time for a new government,” Lapid said earlier. He advocated a “stable” unity government.

Netanyahu on Monday offered Naftley Bennett, the head of the religious-nationalist party Yamina, the post of head of government in an alternative model to stop the “Left Government”. Netanyahu said that Bennett could become Prime Minister in the first year.

Ex-Defense Secretary Bennett, Netanyahu’s former aide, declined the offer. Bennett said he is ready to form a right-wing government anytime. If Netanyahu fails to do so, “we will form a unity government”. A new election must be stopped altogether. There were four elections in Israel within two years.
