Nicola Sturgeon Coronavirus Update as LIVE confirms two more deaths and daily infection record

Nicola Sturgeon and Boris Johnson urge people to pull together as lockdown tightens

The first prime minister and prime minister made separate televised speeches to the nation last night – with the same emotional appeal.

Sturgeon thanked the Scots for months for their efforts to hammer the infection, but warned that “the challenge is once again becoming difficult”.

In a brief statement, he said: “I know this was incredibly difficult – and it’s going to be six months harder. But never forget that humanity has gone through bigger challenges than this. And yet it doesn’t seem like it anymore. “The virus will pass. It will not last forever and one day, hopefully soon, we will not look at it, we will look at it.”

Sturgeon added: “So we’re all struggling with this – and trust me, we’re all struggling – let’s move on together.

“Let’s keep walking, try to keep smiling, keep hoping and keep looking for each other. Be strong, be kind and let us continue to work out of love and unity.

“I will never find the words to thank you all for the tremendous sacrifices you have made so far. And I’m sorry to ask for more.

“But one belief I hold – and one, I ask them to believe in those moments when it all seems so difficult – is this. If we stick with it – and, at most, if we stick with it – we will go through it. “
