NYC subway crash: Northbound train derails after debris strikes station at Chelsea, Manhattan

CHELSIA, Manhattan (WABC) – Police interrogated a man who wrecked debris on a subway track in Manhattan on Sunday morning, causing the train to derail for hours, but no serious injuries were reported.

At 8 a.m. in Chelsea, a train derailed at 8th Avenue and 14th Street train stations, sustaining damage.

Officials described the man being interrogated as a 30-year-old homeless man. They say a witness saw him throwing construction debris on a subway track.

He is currently being interrogated at Transit District 2, with charges pending.

NYCT Interim President Sarah Feinberg said in a statement: “The northbound train came in contact with debris on the roadbed as it was being towed to the 14th-8th Ave station, causing the wheels to derail. “All the passengers aboard the train were safely discharged at the station. The matter is under investigation.”

The MTA says all four tracks were damaged in the incident.

“As a result of this incident, the northbound train near 34th Street remains in the tunnel and NYCT is working quickly to remove customers from the train,” Feinberg said.

Sarah Meyer, chief consumer officer for NYC Transit, also commented on the situation.

The train had about 30 passengers. No serious injuries were reported at this time.

Service has been suspended in both directions south of 14th St. in Manhattan. With 8th Avenue from Canal St. to 59 St.-Columbus Circle, and with limited service in Uptown Manhattan and the Bronx, there is no northbound service.
