TRIBUNE – Alister Jack, Scotland’s secretary of state in the British government, responds to the Scottish Prime Minister, who stated in these columns in a column published on 4 January that the rift between Scots and English was consumed because of Brexit.
In Scotland this time of year we celebrate Burns Night. Rabbi Burns (1–1759–19) 79) is our greatest poet, a man who translated his boundless passion into a life of incomparable intelligence and poetry. Usually – but unfortunately not this year – we get together to dine around a haggis, drink whiskey, and recite our work. It is also a celebration of what it means to be Scottish.
So I invite you to raise your glass to honor our greatest poet this evening, but also toast a lasting bond of friendship between the countries of Scotland and the European Union (EU). On Christmas Eve, the expanded UK-EU agreement covers trade, but also sets out the modalities for ongoing cooperation in security, transport, energy, social security and care.
