Scotland, never happy: three Europeans, three group eliminations. and 11 out of 11 if we also consider the world cup

Poor Scotland. The dream of passing the turn of the Tartan Army was shattered in front of the talent of Croatia. Less physical, but more talented, Modric’s national team imposed itself on the hosts, thus forcing Scottish fans to swallow another bitter mouth. In 11 qualifiers for the final between the World Cup and the European Championship, Scotland has never managed to enter the knockout stage.

1992 – The British national team’s first participation in the final stage of the European Championship dates back to 1992, when the tournament was still reserved for only eight teams. Very simple formula. Two groups of four, playing the first two semi-finals of each group, cross each other and the two are played for the winner’s trophy. Scotland is included in the group along with Germany, the Netherlands and the Commonwealth of Independent States, which is a remnant of the USSR. The first time is never forgotten, but the results on the field are negligible. A loss in the debut against the Netherlands (0–1) and Germany (0–2) closed the chapter. Pride, however, allows Tartan Senna to win, although the result is irrelevant for qualification purposes, the group’s last match against CSI. A 3–0 round which is the first win in a European Championship.

1996 – It didn’t get much better in 1996 when Scotland appeared in the opening line of the European Championship in England. Change format: Four groups of four teams. The top two quarter finals of each group are played. However, the result does not change. Scotland made their debut with a good draw against the Netherlands which allowed them to play a “derby” with England. However, Gascoigne invented one of his best performances of all time and signed two goals (the other is from Shearer) that compromised qualification for the next round. The joke is consumed on the last day. Scotland’s victories against Switzerland and England followed against the Netherlands, but Orange went on to score another goal in the round of 16. Qualification only touched.

World Championship – Tradition in the World Cup is also absolutely negative. The last participation dates back to 1998, when Scotland did not advance past the first round in the group as it did in 1954, 1958, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1990. Eight years later, the Euro 2020 group before the last major event is not impossible. Brazil is invincible, but Norway and Morocco are within reach. No way. Just one point against Norway.
