Sturgeon discusses the future of the country in the Scottish Parliament

“The time has come to get away from the temptations of competitive nationalism and instead affirm the need for power, duty, nations to act together, build a collective defense against the common enemy of disease.”

Mr. Johnson did not name Scotland or Ms. Sturgeon during her speech.
However, his remarks appear to be part of his government’s strategy to focus on recovering from coronoviruses with the SNP’s continued pressure for a so-called IndyRef2.
Speaking after the Holyrood election on 6 May, Mr Johnson, who believes the issue was settled by a 2014 referendum that saw the Scots vote 55% to 45% against independence, told The Telegraph: ” I think the count is still going on and we’ll have to see what happens. “I think the SNP has moved away from the idea of a referendum, and I think very wisely.
“Because I don’t think it’s time for more constitutional wrangling, to talk about separating our country, when in fact people want to fix our economy and bounce back together. That’s what people want . “
Specifically mentioning the possibility of voting in the near future, he said: “I think a referendum in the present context is irresponsible and reckless. Let me stop right there.”

Speaking to Mr. Johnson over the phone after the election, Ms. Sturgeon told Mr. Johnson that another independence referendum was inevitable, as her party won a resounding electoral victory, while not winning an overall majority.
In a statement released later, Ms Sturgeon’s official spokesman said: ‘The Prime Minister reiterated his intention to ensure that the people of Scotland can choose their own future after the crisis is over.
“He made it clear that the question of referendum is now a question of when – or not.”

He later told the BBC that it would be “absurd and completely malicious” for the UK government to take legal action to stop the referendum.
The Scottish Prime Minister argued that to use the “force of law” to block the vote for London would be to say that the 300-year union between England and Scotland was no longer based on consent, and said “I Don’t think we’re going to get there. “
Under the Scottish Act of 1998 – which created the Scottish Parliament and delegated some rights from London to Edinburgh – all matters relating to the “Union of the States of Scotland and England” are reserved for the British Parliament.
