Scotland does not want it to be a “one-league surprise”, Steve Clarke said ahead of the opening match of the World Cup qualifier against Austria.

Clarke’s team will compete in the European Championship in the summer of this year, which is the country’s first final since 1998.

On Thursday, Austria will visit Hampden and in the following days they will play against Israel and the Faroe Islands.

“We want the breakthrough to continue,” Clarke said.

He said, ‘Here the team is completely focused on the World Cup matches because they are the most important. We have said since our qualification for the European Championship that we do not want to be one of the wonders of a single tournament.

Capt. Andy Robertson says the “happiness factor” is still evident after winning last week’s European Championship final.

The left said: “You can see people walking with a big smile ready to take off and show off the Scottish shirt on their faces and that’s what we’re trying to do.” We have to take him to the field.

“We know Austria will be a tough match, we know their qualities but we also know that we and they can cause us problems.”
