Studies Confirm: Required Top-up Dose for Omron

Several US studies show that the third dose of Pfizer-Biontech or Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine provides stronger protection against the Omicron variant, several US studies show.

The studies, which were published on Friday, show similar results to previous studies in Germany, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Those studies have indicated that current vaccines against COVID-19 are less effective against Omicron than previous variants of the coronavirus, but also that refill doses significantly improve protection.

The first study to examine hospitalizations in ten US states found that vaccines from Pfizer-Biotech and Moderna are most effective in preventing COVID-related hospital admissions after three doses.

given strong protection

Vaccine safety dropped from 94 percent during the delta wave to 82 percent during the omicron wave. Protection from only two doses was low, especially if six months had elapsed since the second dose.

The second study focused on confirmed cases and deaths in 25 states from the beginning of April to the end of December. Those receiving the top-up dose had the strongest protection against becoming infected with the coronavirus, both during the time when the Delta version was in effect and when the Omicron version took over.

The two studies were published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

No protection

The third study, led by CDC researchers and published in the American Medical Association’s scientific journal Journal, examined people who tested positive for COVID-19 in late December last year. The study found that a third dose provided about 67 percent protection against symptomatic disease associated with Omicron. However, according to the researchers, the two doses do not provide significant protection against symptomatic disease.
