Armin Laschet (CDU) was filmed laughing while visiting the worst-hit Erftstadt, causing much uproar in Germany. Lachette is the prime minister of the state and a possible successor to Angela Merkel as chancellor.

Laschet was pictured during a speech by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He stands in the background and chats with a few others, while Steinmeier thanks the rescuers and offers his condolences to the victims. Laschet doesn’t cut a nice figure with it, it seems in Germany. Meanwhile, he also had to apologize for his inappropriate appearance in front of the cameras.

Lasquet said he was deeply impressed by the many conversations on the ground. He is mad at himself because at one point he started laughing. “I was on the road all day, there were emotional conversations that really touched me. That’s why I’m more and more bored with those few seconds,” Lashet told the television channel WDR on Sunday evening. Lechette said he didn’t hear what Steinmeier was saying.

“It was not fair, it was not right for me to laugh at such times.” He also expressed regret over the impression he made via Twitter. He said that he was just talking at that time. The incident received a lot of resonance on Twitter with the hashtag #Laschetlacht.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) condemned the incident in Bild newspaper. The SPD sits alongside the CDU in the government. The liberal FDP was also criticized in the newspaper.
