According to the DPA, four people from Brazil, Japan on Sunday, have been confirmed with a new form of coronavirus, the Tokyo Health Ministry announced Agerpres. The four left from Brazil and landed at Tokyo Haneda Airport on 2 January. The ministry said they were dropped off at the airport and showed positive results.
According to Kyodo News, the director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Takaji Waqita, said that this variant is different from those that span the UK and South Africa, but has some similarities.
The institute said there is currently no evidence that the new strain is more contagious.
Of the four, a 40-year-old man was hospitalized after having difficulty breathing. A 30-year-old woman complained of a sore throat and headache, and a teen developed fever. The ministry said the fourth passenger, a teenager, showed no symptoms.
The ministry also reported that it had detected three new confirmed cases of coronavirus virus found in the UK, believed to be more contagious.
In late December, after locating new variants identified in the United Kingdom and South Africa, Japan temporarily suspended the entry of foreign nationals into its territory by the end of January.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared a state of emergency for a month on Thursday due to the epidemic, a measure that targets the capital Tokyo and neighboring provinces – Chiba, Kanagawa and Sitama. The measure went into effect in four provinces on Friday, the day Japan recorded 7,711 new infections, including 2,392 cases in Tokyo – the largest increase in the number of daily cases for the fourth consecutive day.
