A revolution in sight?: Half-time could soon last 25 minutes for some football matches

Will the half-time of football matches be reduced from 15 minutes to 25 minutes? In any case, this is a request made by Coinbemol, the South American football association.

As of now, a football match consists of two intervals of 45 minutes and a break of 15 minutes. Soon this may not happen anymore.

According to the German newspaper Bild, FIFA President Gianni Infantino received a letter from Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL, the South American football association.

This letter, still according to our German colleagues, asks that the half time of the final of the Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) last 25 minutes instead of the usual 15. Longer half-times will now make it possible to increase the quality of half-time shows. The new rule should then apply to other international finals as well.

Dominguez’s idea is based on what is already happening in the United States with the Super Bowl, the final of the American Football Championship. In this particular game, halftime lasts longer than in regular season games and allows for a great show with celebrities.

The decision to change the rules of football is not for FIFA but by the IFAB (International Football Association Board). This body has been in existence since 1886 and is the presence of the commercialization of football in England. Today, it is made up of representatives from FIFA and the four leading British football federations, the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish federations.

The board will discuss this proposal in its next meeting on October 27.

FIFA itself wanted to increase the half-time break to 20 minutes twelve years ago, but this was later assessed as a commercial move and rejected.
