Brexit: Scotland plans second independence referendum

The Scottish Government wants to launch a new independence referendum. In a bill, the exact question of time limits, conditions and vote should now be set, as Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday. In the next general election in May 2021, she will campaign for Scotland to become an independent country that can decide its own future.

But Sturgeon cannot be obliged to hold a referendum, it needs the approval of London. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly clarified that he will not allow a second referendum. From his point of view, the question was clarified in the first referendum in 2014.

At the time, around 55 percent of Scots spoke against secession from the United Kingdom. However, Sturgeon argued that Brexit changed the circumstances. In the British general election in December, Sturgeon’s Scottish National Party SNP benefited. Therefore, the party sees itself as determined in its quest for independence.
