Paris, Madrid, Rome, Athen, London In the future, France will ban air travel on some short-distance routes within the country. Direct flights should be skipped if there is an alternate train connection of maximum two and a half hours. The move by President Emmanuel Macron’s government is part of a legislative package on climate protection that parliament in Paris passed this week after months of debate.
The future of short-haul flights in Germany is also being discussed by the Greens, a topic set in the federal election campaign. Chancellor candidate Annalena Berbock said in May that short-haul flights “should no longer exist in the future”. Lufthansa recently canceled the connection between Munich and Nuremberg.
On important domestic German routes, however, there is still a lack of a fast train option that can accompany aircraft. Many European countries are facing this problem. Some apparently continue to rely on domestic flights – at least not for geographical reasons. An overview:
