The controversial Keystone XL pipeline project between Canada and the United States has been abandoned, Canadian operator TC Energy said on Wednesday, nearly five months after US President Joe Biden decided to block it.
“TC Energy today, after a full review of its options and in consultation with its partner, the Government of Alberta, confirmed that it has terminated the Keystone XL pipeline project,” it said in a statement. .
The Canadian group announced the suspension of work on January 20, hours before Mr Biden signed the decree. The group, based in Calgary in western Canada, had accordingly announced “the layoffs of thousands of unionized workers”, expressing their dismay.
The project, supported by Ottawa but criticized by environmentalists, was launched in 2008. First canceled by Barack Obama, as it was deemed too polluting, it was put back on track by Donald Trump for economic reasons.
The repeal of his predecessor’s decree was one of the promises of Joe Biden’s campaign, as part of his plan to fight climate change. This also disappointed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The project was intended to transport more than 800,000 barrels of oil per day from 2023 between the Canadian province of Alberta and US refineries in the Gulf of Mexico. But it has been criticized by environmentalists because of its effect on greenhouse gas emissions.
