Historic win against Scotland! Japan in the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time
Japan is in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup for the first time in its history. A day after Typhoon Hagibis struck, Brave Blossom won the deciding group game 28:21 against Scotland.
The whole rugby world is happy with this except Scotland. Along with hosts Japan, a team from Asia and for the first time not belonging to Tier 1 countries qualified for the knockout rounds. The so-called “brave blossoms” (brave cherry blossoms) lived up to their name.
After falling 7-0 early and making a very nervous start, the Japanese scored 28 points in a row until the 43rd minute. Scots’ final sprint came too late after that. They need to win by eight points to capture an unbeaten Japan.
Japan has qualified for every World Cup since its inception in 1987. However, he achieved only one success in the first seven tournaments. Four years earlier they were unsuccessful, despite three victories in the preliminary round. This time they beat world number four Ireland, Samoa and Russia before Scotland and finished the preliminary round as group winners. The prize is next Sunday’s quarter-final against tournament favorites South Africa.
Quarter Finals:
Apart from Japan, Wales also took a group victory on Sunday with a 35:13 win against Uruguay to face France in the quarter-finals. In the upper part of the table, which is strong on paper, top favorites New Zealand face Ireland and England face Australia. (EX/SDA)
