More than 2 million Scots will face near-lockdown sanctions for three weeks after Nicola Sturgeon imposed covid sanctions at the country’s highest level in the west of Scotland.
After a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, Scotland’s first minister told the MSP that 4 of the 11 local authority areas would be entered – the highest of Scotland’s five-tier system of virus control – for a limited period this Friday from 6pm.
Local authorities are West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, Ranfrushire, East Ranfrewshire, Glasgow City, North Lanarkshire, South Lan Lan Nakshire, West Lothian, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire and Stirling.
People living under Level Under Restrictions are advised to keep all travel to a minimum.
Sturz said police would enforce the new law banning travel at the level and areas as a “last resort” and “where clear and explicit violations occur”, but stressed the importance of not traveling from top to bottom. Wide areas.
She said: “Passing these rules sends a very clear and strong message to people about our importance of following these rules.”
Sturgeon said Level 4 was going to be “short and sharp”, promising that the restrictions would be lifted on December 11, adding that “especially the anticipation of Christmas and the impact of the most challenging winter period”.
Level 4 limitations are very close to the lockdown imposed in March, however, two houses are still allowed out of town for a maximum of six people and there is no limit to outdoor exercise.
All non-essential shops will close with pubs, restaurants and cafes, as well as gym and leisure centers, hairdressers, male, beautician and indoor visitor attractions.
Schools and nurseries will remain open.
Sturgeon told the chamber that although the level of infection in the west of Scotland had stabilized or decreased slightly as a result of the 3-tier measure, the infection rate was “stubbornly and worryingly high”.
“At this level, we are confident that we will not be able to cope with the hospital and ICU services going into the winter.”
“And at this level further we should not need to relax restrictions on Christmas – which we generally want to tighten as much as other countries in the UK.”
Sturgeon told MSP that this week the total number of coronavirus deaths in Scotland is likely to exceed 1,000, which he called a “sombre and deeply painful milestone”.
