Thursday will be the British’s first major mood test since the 2019 general election. But the main interest is the question of whether Scotland is setting the course for a new independence referendum.
LONDON – For the first time since the 2019 general election in which Boris Johnson won, voters in England, Scotland and Wales have been called to vote this Thursday. Last May, during the devastating first wave of Covid, all local and regional elections in the UK were cancelled. The elections, which are now being rescheduled and new ones due, make the ballot one of the biggest in decades. Around 5000 city and county councils and seven regional mayors are to be re-elected across England. In London, Western Europe’s largest municipality, new elections for the Municipal Assembly and the Mayor of London are due. The results of this first nationwide mood test since Brexit and the start of the pandemic are eagerly awaited.
