The Florida government has extended the state’s deadline for Florida residents to register to vote after the state registration website crashed due to heavy traffic.

The new registration deadline is Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In a statement, Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee said the state’s online registration portal received “unprecedented volume and traffic” of 1.1 million requests in an hour on Monday evening.

“We are working with local election supervisors and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to ensure that all eligible registers can submit a voter registration application by 00:00 this evening.” Statement.

“We will work closely with our state and federal law enforcement partners to ensure that this is not an intentional act against the voting process.”

Crash, which sparked Outrage From Democrats, thousands of potential voters could have been barred from running in the Nov. 3 general election.

The outage comes as the state is once again very competitive in the presidential race this fall. Former Vice President Joe Biden campaigned in Miami on Monday.

On Tuesday, a coalition of voting rights groups filed a lawsuit against Descentis and Lee seeking to extend the registration deadline by at least two days, arguing that the one-day extension was not enough to educate voters that they could try. Re-register.

“Florida’s OVR system has a history of being flawed and broken prematurely, just like the last day of registration before the main election.” Stephanie Porta, Executive Director of Organized Florida.

“Amid the global health epidemic, Floridians’ right to vote cannot be denied because the Secretary of State cannot properly update and maintain the website.”
